Automated Gate Installation at Pinson Mounds
Automated Gate Installation at Pinson Mounds
The Project
The Pinson Mounds Forestry Complex sits along a gravel service drive at the edge of a wooded property — exactly the kind of site where a standard swing gate with a padlock isn't going to cut it long-term. Our installation included:
- Black steel cantilever slide gate spanning the full width of the gravel drive entry
- Electric gate operator with keypad access control mounted at the gate post
- Heavy-duty steel frame construction with cross-bracing for structural rigidity
- Black vinyl-coated chain link running the property perimeter on both sides of the gate
- Concrete-set gate posts anchored deep enough to handle the load of a motorized cantilever system
The gate opens and closes along a cantilever track system, meaning it slides parallel to the fence line rather than swinging outward — the right design choice for a gravel drive entry where a swing gate could drag, bind, or become difficult to operate over time.
Why an Automated Slide Gate?
For a forestry or government facility like Pinson Mounds, an automated gate solves several problems that a manual gate can't.
24/7 Access Control Authorized personnel can enter and exit at any time without needing a second person to unlock and relock the gate. The keypad system ensures only people with the correct code can access the property, and codes can be changed whenever access needs to be updated.
Reduced Wear on the Gate A manual gate on a regularly used service drive gets opened and closed dozens of times a week. That repeated use puts stress on the hinges, latch hardware, and frame. An automated operator is engineered specifically for that kind of cycle count and distributes the load more evenly across the system, extending the gate's service life.
Security Without Inconvenience One of the biggest reasons facilities skip proper gate security is the inconvenience factor — nobody wants to get out of their vehicle to unlock a gate every time they need to enter. An automated system eliminates that friction entirely, which means the gate actually gets used as intended rather than being propped open out of habit.
Cantilever Design for Unpaved Entries Swing gates work well on paved, level surfaces. On a gravel drive, though, ground movement, ruts, and seasonal settling can cause a swing gate's bottom edge to drag and bind. A cantilever slide gate is suspended above the ground on a track system, so it operates cleanly regardless of what's happening at ground level — an important detail on a rural, unpaved entry like this one.
Gate Operator and Keypad Integration
The electric operator and keypad mounted at the gate post are what turn a standard slide gate into a true access control system. A few things go into getting that integration right:
Operator Sizing Gate operators are rated for gate weight and cycle frequency. Undersizing an operator for a heavy steel gate leads to premature motor failure and frustrating breakdowns. We size the operator to the actual gate — not the minimum spec — so the system holds up under real-world use.
Post Strength The gate operator anchors to the main drive post, which takes on both the weight of the gate and the torque of the motor during operation. That post has to be set correctly in concrete to handle it. A post that shifts even slightly will throw off the gate's alignment and put extra strain on the operator over time.
Weather Protection Outdoor gate operators and keypads need to be rated for the elements. Tennessee summers bring heat, humidity, and storms — and winters bring their own challenges. The equipment we install is selected and positioned to handle the full range of West Tennessee weather without failing.
Chain Link Perimeter Fencing
The black vinyl-coated chain link running the perimeter of the Forestry Complex ties into the gate on both sides, creating a complete secured boundary. The black finish gives the whole installation a consistent, professional look that holds up in a wooded, rural setting without requiring any maintenance.
For government and public land properties, black chain link with a properly integrated gate system is the combination that makes the most sense — durable, cost-effective, secure, and low maintenance year after year.
Access Control Fencing for Government and Public Properties
Pinson Mounds is one of several government and public land properties we've had the opportunity to work with across West Tennessee. Whether it's a state park, a forestry complex, a utility site, or a municipal facility, access control fencing and gate systems are an area where experience matters. Getting the post depth, operator sizing, and gate alignment right the first time saves significant money and headache down the road.
If your facility is in need of an upgraded gate system or perimeter fencing, we'd love to talk through the options with you.
