A Park Built for the Whole Community: Our Fencing Work at Depot Park
The Project
Depot Park called for two distinct types of fencing, each suited to a different part of the property.
Black vinyl-coated chain link was installed along the rear perimeter of the park, bordering the open field and tree line. This section includes:
- Full-height chain link fencing running the length of the property line
- Clean post alignment maintained even where the fence line runs along uneven, tree-lined terrain
- A simple, durable boundary that defines the park's edge without obstructing the open field
Ornamental aluminum fencing was installed along the Main Street frontage and around the playground and pavilion area, including:
- Decorative black aluminum picket fencing along the street-facing side of the park
- Fencing integrated around the accessible ramp leading up to the main pavilion
- A perimeter enclosure around the playground equipment for added child safety
- Brick-capped columns at entry points, tying the fencing into the park's overall design
Using two different fencing styles in one project isn't unusual for parks — it's actually the right call. The rear chain link keeps costs reasonable for a long open boundary where appearance is secondary to function. The ornamental aluminum up front gives the park a polished, welcoming look where it matters most: the street view and the areas where families and kids spend their time.
Why Ornamental Aluminum for Public-Facing Areas
When a fence is the first thing people see from the road, it sets the tone for the whole property. Ornamental aluminum fencing was the right choice for Depot Park's Main Street frontage for a few reasons:
Curb Appeal The black aluminum picket style gives the park a clean, classic look that fits the small-town charm of a Main Street setting. It frames the park rather than walling it off.
Child Safety Around the playground specifically, fencing serves a real safety function — keeping kids contained within the play area and away from the street or parking areas. The picket spacing on ornamental aluminum fencing is designed specifically to prevent kids from climbing through or getting stuck.
Low Maintenance Like steel, aluminum fencing doesn't rust, rot, or require repainting. For a municipal property maintained by city staff or volunteers, that's a major advantage — it keeps looking sharp for years without anyone needing to touch it.
ADA-Friendly Integration The fencing along the accessible ramp at Depot Park was installed to work with the ramp's handrails rather than against them, keeping the area both safe and code-compliant for visitors using the ramp to access the pavilion.
Why Chain Link for the Rear Perimeter
For the back of the property, chain link was the practical choice. Open fields and tree-lined boundaries don't need decorative fencing — they need a fence that clearly marks the property line, holds up to the elements, and doesn't require a large budget to cover a long run of footage.
Black vinyl-coated chain link gave the rear perimeter a clean, dark finish that doesn't clash with the more decorative front fencing, even though the styles are different. It's a detail that's easy to overlook but makes the whole property feel cohesive rather than mismatched.
Fencing That Serves the Whole Property
What makes Depot Park a great example of smart fencing planning is that no single fence style was used everywhere just for the sake of consistency. Instead, the right fencing was matched to the right part of the property — decorative and safety-focused where people gather, and practical and economical along the open perimeter.
That kind of planning is something we bring to every municipal and public property project we take on, whether it's a small-town park, a school athletic complex, or a city-owned facility.
